Tough to beat. Dice rolls favor the AI almost every time, Has potential with a followup version.. I've only played this game for a few hours and normally I'd wait to post a review but I'm posting now to balance all the negative reviews that it seems to be getting. So far the game has been A LOT OF FUN. It's not Advanced Squad Leader but it's very well designed and chock full of personality and humor (most of it coming from the original board game). Yes, there is a significant RNG element to it but it's probably no worse than other games; it's simply that in this game you actually get to see the dice rolls (which I enjoy since I grew up with Avalon Hill games like Panzer Blitz). My one complaint so far (again, I've not played for very long) is that the price is a bit steep, which almost kept me from buying it. Since there's no demo available my suggestion would be to buy it now, play it for an hour, then ask for a Steam refund if you really don't like it. Or wait for a sale; if you're a cheap-skate like me then pick it up when it's $10 or less. That said, I decided to keep it after paying $20 rather than wait for that sale. As I said, it's fun!. 1. Expensive..in 2015 a simple piece of cartoon for 28 euro? bad joke..2. Full of bug in single and multiplayer3. A primitive total random generator with dice..no logic, no strategic only random dice rolling4. Multiplayer with 4 scenario only and thats all? 1 day and boring5. Dont waste your money!. The game has really come a long way. A much higer production value compared to others of its kind.. Was a beta tester, now I'm a happy owner of the release.This is a mostly faithful adaptation of the board game by Devil Pig Games. Take a look at the screenshots above and compare to the original tabletop game and you'll see that it's almost identical. It's a gateway wargame - it has many familiar wargame concepts, but it's simplified so almost anyone can quickly learn it. It's a beer-and-pretzels kinda thing, it's not meant to be a realistic simulation. The game is based on the war movie concept of WWII, not the actual historical event.There are 3 single-player campaigns which will last at least a few hours (more if you want to get all the bonus objectives), and a skirmish mode, but IMO the real fun is multiplayer. The game is turn-based and PBEM (play-by-email) so you can keep several games going at a time and play your turns whenever you have a few minutes to spare. I've had as many as 5 simultaneous games going, taking turns in each throughout the day. A particularly fun thing is to setup the same scenario with different opponents and try radically different strategies in each game.The boardgame has quite a few expansions, so I expect this game will be supported very well into the future. There's a map editor on the way, plus there's an iPad version coming next year which will have cross-platform play with the PC version, so the player base should remain robust for a while.Criticisms: - The boardgame has a card mechanic that this version is missing. The developers are planning on adding the cards in the future. But if you're looking for a perfect translation of the board game, this isn't it (yet).- If you hate random dice rolls, this is not be the game for you. You have to been willing to accept losing a scenario because of one unlucky roll. If that sounds frustrating, you should stay away. If you play smart you can increase your chances in every fight, but there's almost always going to be a roll that goes against you at the absolute worst time.Edit: Since I wrote this review a few days ago, the devs have already patched the game twice, fixing bugs and adding an option to reduce some of the randomness of the dice. You can turn this new option off if you want purely random dice, or leave it on to reduce bad luck streaks. I haven't tried the new mode, but it seems like a sensible compromise, especially for new players.Bottom line - if you're new to wargames or even an old grognard, there's a lot to like about Heroes of Normandie. It's a quick, fun play with a great sense of humor and gorgeous board game design.. The game flat-out doesn't work. I got about 30 minutes of play before the menu items began behaving like they were mired in mud, essentially useless, as is the game :(. game that rolls too many one's for the player side while rolling 5's and 6's for the AI side. It'd be ok if it only happened once but this is EVERY game for me. Even when I change sides hoping things will change, nope same ole 1's for the player and 5's and 6's for the AI. Everygame I lose more units than the AI and there's no way in hell to kill all of them at this rate for the 270 victory points in Skirmish. They said Halftracks get move and fire and move, well one turn I only got to move and fire and it stopped my halftrack out in the open and no I did not move the full allowance of movement points. Course you know the tank blew me to smithereens the next turn.Also why in the hell can everybody see through woods? I mean you might as well not even have that glob of green in the middle of the map if everything can shoot through it.The only thing I saw that WORKS is zone of control. If an enemy is next to you then you can't advanced past it without putting a tile between you..I got my money back and I'm glad I did. This would have been a WASTED $20 bucks.EDIT: I won't be a part of the upgrade but if Iain did what he said they were going to do then the game is probably improved over my original post. I won't buy the game again until all the features are in like cards etc.etc.The only other feature I would have changed would be the orders limits. Have a feature that lets us play with all the units in a mission and the ai as well. No orders just phases. I hope you increased the number of turns per mission as well cause 4 turns is just not enough or much fun. It's just a racehorse game to the finish. It's like going to a mile long run race and only quarter horse races are being allowed.
